First Glimpse: Joseph Fiennes Portrays Soccer Manager Gareth Southgate in BBC’s ‘Dear England’

Joseph Fiennes is set to return as England football manager Gareth Southgate in the upcoming BBC drama Dear England, with the first images from the series now released. Fiennes, previously nominated for an Olivier Award for his stage portrayal of Southgate in James Grahams play, is shown both celebrating victories and navigating media interactions in the new photos, which arrive just ahead of the World Cup draw.

Other photos reveal Fiennes alongside Will Antenbring, who plays England captain Harry Kane, and Jodie Whittaker as the team psychologist Pippa Grange. Jason Watkins appears as FA chairman Greg Dyke, with several actors from the stage production reprising their roles.

The original play provided a dramatized yet researched depiction of the challenges and achievements of Englands football team. When Southgate took over as manager, England had the poorest penalty record globally. He worked to confront past disappointments, ultimately leading the team from a painful group-stage exit at Euro 2016 to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final.

James Graham, creator of Sherwood, adapted his play into the series, inspired by an open letter Southgate wrote to football fans. Produced by Left Bank, known for The Crown, the series is slated for broadcast next year. Lindsay Salt, BBC Drama Director, commissioned the show. Graham co-wrote the series with Rupert Goold, who directed the stage version and the first episode. Paul Whittington will direct episodes two through four, with Tina Pawlik producing. Executive producers include Graham, Goold, Andy Harries, Rebecca Hodgson, and Jo McClellan. Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution.
