Gillian Anderson: Strong Fiona angers Constance in 'Abandons'

NEW YORK, Dec. 4 Gillian Anderson, known for her iconic roles in The X-Files and The Crown, portrays Constance in the new western series The Abandons, where her character encounters an unexpected obstacle: a formidable woman named Fiona, played by Lena Headey, who refuses to relinquish her land despite Constance's business ambitions.

The series, created by Sons of Anarchy writer-producer Kurt Sutter, is set in 19th-century Washington state and streams on Netflix starting Thursday. The story centers on Constance, a wealthy and determined businesswoman, clashing with Fiona, who protects an orphanage situated on the silver-rich property Constance desires.

Anderson described her characters frustration: "Constance is used to getting what she wants through influence or persuasion. Facing Fiona, who resists all her efforts, is deeply aggravating." She added that her characters pursuit is driven by a personal mission alongside her late husbands shared dream, making her struggle both professional and emotional.

Headey, reflecting on Fiona, emphasized the similarities between the two women: "Both aim to survive and thrive. Constance starts with privilege, whereas Fiona has fought for everything. Yet Fiona guards what she values most, which obstructs Constances plans, and theres a subtle tension fueled by envy."

Their conflict is further complicated by motherhood. Constance is a biological mother to three adult children, while Fiona, who could not have biological children, fiercely cares for her adopted ones. Headey explained, "Fionas love for her kids is intense, but insecurities remain since they are not her own. Constance is aware of this vulnerability and occasionally highlights it."

Anderson noted that Constances primary devotion has always been to her late husband and their shared ambitions, with her children as a secondary but significant concern. "When a child goes missing, she mourns deeply. Yet, her drive to fulfill her dream continues to push her forward."

Headey immersed herself in Fionas world with dialect coaching for an Irish accent and relied on hair, makeup, and costume teams to authentically portray a hardworking, earthy woman ready to defend her ground at any moment. Anderson similarly highlighted that Constance, despite her wealth, is no fragile figure, describing her as "sturdy, grounded, and willing to get her hands dirty."

Fans of Sons of Anarchy may recognize familiar names and faces, as the series carries thematic parallels of family, loyalty, and conflict. While neither actress had seen each others previous shows before joining the project, Headey explored clips of Sons of Anarchy to understand the creators style.

The Abandons presents a tense showdown between two strong matriarchs, blending ambition, loyalty, and survival in the rugged landscape of 19th-century America.
