Steve Cropper, the acclaimed guitarist whose work helped define the Memphis soul sound on iconic Stax Records tracks, has passed away at the age of 84. His contributions to recordings by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Booker T. & The M.G.s made him a pivotal figure in American music.
Pat Mitchell Worley, president and CEO of the Soulsville Foundation, which manages the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis, confirmed Croppers death. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Steve Croppers impact on soul and R&B music is immeasurable, Worley said. As a founding member of Booker T. & the M.G.s and a key architect of the Stax Records sound, his guitar playing and songwriting created timeless music that continues to inspire generations. His work helped define an era and secured his place as one of the most influential guitarists in modern music history.
Croppers guitar can be heard on classics like Sam & Daves Soul Man, Booker T. & The M.G.s Green Onions, Wilson Picketts In the Midnight Hour, and Otis Reddings (Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay. He also co-wrote the latter three tracks, leaving an indelible mark on each.
Rolling Stone recognized Cropper as number 45 on its list of the 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, noting his distinctive style: His subtle, soulful playing shaped some of the greatest rock and soul songs ever recorded. The signature riffs in Green Onions and Dock of the Bay exemplify the essence of soul guitar.
Despite his fame, Cropper remained humble about his role. I dont care about being center stage, he once said. Ive always been a band member.
Cropper was born in Missouri and moved to Memphis as a child, where he was influenced by gospel music. As a teenager, he co-founded the Mar-Keys, whose instrumental Last Night became one of Staxs early hits after the label changed its name from Satellite Records. The Mar-Keys eventually evolved into Booker T. & The M.G.s for their own recordings, while continuing as Staxs house band.
After nearly a decade at Stax, Cropper relocated to Los Angeles, becoming a sought-after session musician. He played with John Lennon, Ringo Starr, John Prine, Leon Russell, Rod Stewart, and joined the Blues Brothers band, appearing in the 1980 film adaptation.
Cropper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 as part of Booker T. & The M.G.s. He won two Grammy Awards and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, cementing his status as a music legend.
