Guns N' Roses Finish Working on 'Nothin' and 'Atlas' From 'Chinese Democracy' Sessions

As their global tour approaches in spring, Guns N Roses have revisited material from the Chinese Democracy sessions to release two new singles. On Thursday, the band unveiled Nothin and Atlas, now refreshed with new recordings by guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, after decades of sitting in the archives.

Atlas, a mid-tempo hard rock track with a poignant edge, was previously known as Atlas Shrugged, a nod to Ayn Rands novel, according to a 2025 interview with A&R representative Tom Zutaut. He noted, We were adding overdubs with Buckethead and Robin Finck, and doing some work with Tommy Stinson. At the time, tracks like The Blues, Madagascar, and Chinese Democracy felt complete. Atlas Shrugged was in a strong place.

The current version runs about four minutes, featuring Axl Rose singing, Id be the last to say, Dont, follow your heart/But theres more to what it takes to be a man. Slashs signature guitar lines weave around Roses vocals, while McKagans hollow, driving bass grounds the song, blending elements of the Chinese Democracy era with the bands classic sound.

In contrast, Nothin presents a slightly different approach. Opening with a piano melody reminiscent of a Wings track, Slashs guitar transforms it into unmistakable Guns N Roses territory. The guitars expressive bends and slides complement Roses lyrics about seeking salvation, and a solo midway elevates the song from a potential ballad into a dynamic rock moment.

Both tracks had surfaced previously through a 2019 leak, featuring early versions of Nothin from around 2000 and Atlas Shrugged from 2001 sessions. Earlier this year, Slash hinted at the possibility of a new GNR album in an interview with Guitar World, emphasizing the challenge of organizing the bands extensive material: Theres so much material at this point its a matter of having the discipline to sit down and get into it. With Guns, you cant really plan. Things happen on their own schedule.

Fans can likely expect these songs in live performances next year, as Nothin was soundchecked before a concert in Yokohama, Japan this May. The tour begins in March, starting in Monterrey, Mexico, followed by two shows in Florida in May, with a full North American run commencing in July.
