Hainan Film Festival Launch Commemorates Hong Kong Fire Tragedy

At the grand opening of the Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF), a moment of quiet reflection touched the audience. Xing Bo, Vice President of China Media Group, honored the victims of the recent Tai Po apartment fire in Hong Kong, which has claimed around 159 lives, with approximately 30 people still missing.

Distinguished guests and friends, as the moon hangs low in the sky, we mourn those lost in the Hong Kong fire and offer our thoughts to their families. May the departed rest in peace, and may the survivors find courage, Xing said to an audience exceeding 1,000.

The tribute emphasized cinema's power to unite people and convey shared humanity, especially during challenging times. Clips from Hong Kong classics like Comrades, Almost a Love Story were shown, blending remembrance with celebration as the festival marked both its 7th edition and the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema.

James Cameron also acknowledged the milestone in a video message, saying, Celebrating 120 years of Chinese cinema reflects your dedication as creators and audiences alike. Cinemas immersive big-screen magic, driven by innovation and imagination, is at the heart of the Avatar films, and we look forward to sharing the next chapter with you.

This week, HIIFF will premiere the Chinese screening of Avatar: Fire and Ash, with Cameron in attendance. The opening ceremony took place at an outdoor arena on the artificial Phoenix Island in Sanya City, Hainan. The event featured prominent local stars like Guo Tao, while a few international filmmakers, including Argentinian Mariano Llins and French documentarian Sylvian George, participated as jury members.

Jury president Marco Mller highlighted the festivals focus on the growing strength of Chinese cinema, stating, This year, both in artistic quality and market influence, Chinese films have made significant progress.

The 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival will continue through December 9.
