Warning: Spoilers for the first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 ahead!
Jane Hopper, also known as Eleven, continues to struggle with leading a normal life in Stranger Things, one of Netflixs most popular binge-worthy shows. After the events of Season 3, Eleven moved out of Hawkins, Indiana with the Byers family. Even after reuniting with her adoptive father, Jim Hopper, at the end of Season 4, the reopening of portals to the Upside Down in Hawkins forces her into hiding by the start of Season 5.
The Season 5 premiere reveals this through a missing person poster for Eleven, and intriguingly, the phone number displayed is real and can be dialed. Many fans tried it, including myself, calling 765-303-2020 to check if it works. It does, and the automated message is as follows:
"Thank you for contacting the Hawkins Police Department. Due to the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake, Hawkins is currently under lockdown to ensure the safety of our citizens. The Hawkins Emergency Task Force is working closely with Hawkins PD to track down missing persons, of which Jane Hopper is a priority. We urge you, as a responsible citizen of Hawkins, to assist us in our search to locate her."
Between Seasons 4 and 5, Eleven had to stay in hiding while the U.S. military continued pursuing her. Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan failed to capture her at the NINA facility in Nevada, and Dr. Kay later took over the mission once Hawkins was under military control. As a result, Eleven remains in quarantine within the town, training under Hoppers guidance while keeping a low profile.
Most Hawkins residents are unaware of Elevens true identity, so seeing her as a missing person naturally prompts them to alert the authorities. Unknown to them, the military has more sinister intentions, intending to experiment on her similarly to what they did with another test subject, Eight, at their Upside Down facility.
On a lighter note, Netflixs effort to make the phone number interactive adds a fun element for fans instead of leaving it inactive. Only three weeks remain until the next three episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 premiere on Christmas Day, followed by the series finale, a two-hour event, on New Years Eve.
Analysis: Eleven’s Struggle and Interactive Engagement in Stranger Things Season 5
The first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 continue to show Eleven navigating the challenges of a normal life while remaining a target for military pursuit. Following her reunion with Jim Hopper at the end of Season 4, she is forced into hiding due to the reopening of the Upside Down portals in Hawkins.
The missing person poster featured in the premiere highlights her precarious situation. Netflix added an interactive element by providing a real, dialable phone number. Fans, including myself, confirmed that calling 765-303-2020 triggers an automated message from the Hawkins Police Department detailing the search for Jane Hopper after a recent earthquake.
Eleven’s concealment and ongoing training under Hopper’s guidance underline the military’s continued interest in her abilities. With Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan and later Dr. Kay attempting to capture her, the storyline emphasizes both the danger she faces and the secrecy surrounding her identity in Hawkins. Residents, unaware of her true nature, naturally report her as missing, highlighting the tension between public perception and hidden threats.
From a production standpoint, Netflix’s inclusion of a working phone number demonstrates a creative approach to fan engagement, blending narrative with interactive elements. As the remaining three episodes premiere on Christmas Day, culminating in a two-hour finale on New Year’s Eve, the series maintains both suspense and immersive audience participation.
