After returning home, Jono discovered his contract had been terminated and faced local suspicion of theft. He struggled with anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and worsened diabetes. In 2015, the family sold their business and moved to Gloucestershire. He resubmitted in 2004, and after several delays, his case was moved to a new appeals system under the Department for Business and Trade, but he passed away before resolution. He had only received an interim payment, which he used to buy a small caravan near Cirencester.
