Daytime Emmy-winning actor Greg Vaughan is set to appear on Beyond the Gates starting December 8, portraying Kial Rollins, an orthopedic surgeon arriving in Fairmont Crest with a rich backstory. Vaughans casting came through an unexpected call from the shows creator, Michele Val Jean, who previously wrote for General Hospital during Vaughans time as Lucky Spencer from 2003 to 2009.
She contacted me, and I was genuinely surprised, Vaughan shared. She said she had a role in mind for me, and I agreed before knowing all the details. Ive always appreciated her writing and the chance to work with her again.
Once onboard, Vaughan discovered that Kial is a widowed father with two adult sons. When I found out hes an orthopedic surgeon, I thought, I can relate to this. I have three boys who spend a lot of time in hospitals, so it felt authentic, he said. Yet Vaughan acknowledges that playing a doctor brings its own challenges. I remembered my days on General Hospital and thought, Will the medical dialogue be tough? I know Ill have work to do to make it convincing.
Vaughan describes Kial as somewhat of a wanderer, trying to find his place in Fairmont Crest and navigating relationships with hospital staff. Despite his extensive soap opera experienceincluding roles on The Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives, and Queen Sugarthis project offered him a fresh experience. The energy on set is incredible. Everyone is enthusiastic, and I wanted to observe and immerse myself in the ensemble, he explained.
Although Vaughan knew some cast members, including Timon Kyle Durrett and Daphne Duplaix, many were new to him. It was funny walking in and being asked if this was my first job. I just wanted to blend in and enjoy working with such talented young actors and seasoned veterans like Clifton Davis, Vaughan noted.
His former co-stars from Days of our Lives have supported his new role. I received well wishes from colleagues, which made the transition easier. Its bittersweet leaving one chapter, but a new door has opened, he said. Vaughan remains open to returning to Days in the future but is excited about this new opportunity. Kial is different from anything Ive done before. Im not confined to a single type of role, and its refreshing to explore a new side of my acting, he shared.
Filming in Atlanta also allows Vaughan to spend more time with his eldest son, Jathan, who attends the University of Alabama. Its a blessing to be closer, so I can visit him more often, even if he sometimes pretends he doesnt want me around, he joked.
With his debut approaching, Vaughan expressed excitement for whats ahead. Its thrilling to step into this new environment and be welcomed by Michele and the cast. I look forward to fans seeing me in a new light as Kial Rollins, he said.
Beyond the Gates, weekdays on CBS.
