Despite the abundance of streaming services today, many assume that nearly every film ever made is accessible online. In reality, countless movies are lost, and many existing films survive only in low-quality copies without a proper 35mm print. Without a costly restoration, these films will always appear rough. Over time, online versionssometimes sourced from old VHS tapes cropped for 4:3 screensmay vanish entirely, leaving viewers to hunt for pirated versions.
Hrafn Gunnlaugssons Viking epic When the Raven Flies currently exists in just such a precarious state. Released in 1984 and submitted as Icelands entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards (though it wasnt nominated), the story is set in the 9th century and follows an Irishman seeking vengeance against the Vikings who murdered his parents. Today, it can be found on YouTube in a poorly cropped 480p format, hardly the viewing experience the 77-year-old Gunnlaugsson likely envisioned. Yet, despite this, the film remains recognized as one of the 14 best Viking movies ever made.
What makes When the Raven Flies distinctive is its approach: a Viking tale crafted in the style of a Spaghetti Western. Jakob r Einarsson stars as Gestur, the Irish protagonist who manipulates two rival Viking clans to exact revenge for his parents deaths. A complicating factor is his sister, kidnapped in childhood and portrayed by Edda Bjrgvinsdttir, who refuses to help him.
The combat in the film is unconventional for the genre. Rather than epic sword battles, much of the fighting is done with knives, often thrown, evoking styles seen in films like The Magnificent Seven or The Big Gundown. While axes were historically accurate for the era, their absence doesnt entirely undermine the realism. Working with a limited budget, Gunnlaugsson skillfully stages action scenes, paying close attention to actor placement and the interplay of foreground and background. The result is a film with a strong visual composition, even if it lacks polish.
If youre curious about a unique Viking adventure, When the Raven Flies is worth seeking out on YouTubewhile the video lasts. Hopefully, Gunnlaugsson will someday secure the resources needed to restore this remarkable piece of cinematic history.
Analysis: The Fragile Legacy of "When the Raven Flies"
From my perspective, the current state of Hrafn Gunnlaugsson’s 1984 film When the Raven Flies highlights a broader issue in film preservation. Despite its recognition as one of the best Viking movies ever made, the only widely accessible versions are low-resolution online uploads, often cropped from older formats. This compromises the viewing experience and diminishes the film’s artistic impact.
The film’s unique combination of Viking narrative and Spaghetti Western style deserves better presentation. Jakob Þór Einarsson’s portrayal of Gestur, along with the carefully staged action sequences, demonstrates a thoughtful use of limited resources. Yet, without a proper restoration, the visual and historical integrity of the film risks being permanently lost.
In practical terms, viewers seeking this movie today face a narrow window of opportunity. Online copies may disappear, leaving only pirated versions, which further threatens the legacy of Gunnlaugsson’s work. The situation underlines the importance of investing in film preservation, not only for well-known blockbusters but also for culturally significant cinema that might otherwise vanish from public access.
Ultimately, When the Raven Flies remains a remarkable example of Icelandic filmmaking. Its survival depends on both awareness and action from institutions or individuals capable of restoring and maintaining high-quality prints for future audiences.
