Jane Fonda has raised strong objections to Netflixs landmark acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, describing the $82.7 billion agreement as a disastrous move that could undermine the entire creative sector. Her statement was issued through Instagram on behalf of her Committee for the 1st Amendment.
In her message, Fonda warned that news of Warner Bros. Discovery accepting the purchase offer represents a dangerous intensification of media consolidation that threatens the entertainment business, its democratic role, and First Amendment protections.
She emphasized that the transaction is not simply a devastating corporate decision but a constitutional emergency, pointing to what she described as the current administrations disregard for legal principles.
Fonda urged federal and state regulators to refrain from using their authority to leverage political gains that could sway content creation or suppress free expression.
Addressing Netflix and any other companies participating in the merger, she insisted they have a duty to protect fundamental rights rather than sacrifice them for financial gain, adding that resistance to mounting pressure is essential.
The broader Hollywood community has reacted skeptically to the merger, with lawmakers, filmmakers, and industry unions sharing rising concerns. Many anticipate that the acquisition will trigger major changes across the entertainment landscape, particularly for theatrical distribution.
After months of negotiations, Netflix officially secured its purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery, surpassing competing bids from Paramounts Skydance and Comcast. The cash-and-stock deal, priced at $27.75 per share, is expected to be finalized within 12 to 18 months, according to statements from both companies.
