Jay Kelly Takes Us on a Grand European Tour with George Clooney

In the latest feature from Netflixs On Location, viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a glamorous comedy-drama starring George Clooney as Jay Kelly. The story follows Jay, a pampered Hollywood actor, who is thrust into solo travel for the first time as he follows his daughter Daisy on a European backpacking trip. Ron, his skeptical manager played by Adam Sandler, warns him, Youd be like a cocker spaniel in the Serengeti! emphasizing how out of his element Jay is.

With decades of fame and luxury under his belt, Jay has never navigated life alone or faced ordinary challenges. When he sets off to reconnect with his daughter and reconsider his career, he is accompanied by a revolving entourage, including his sharp publicist (Laura Dern), an eccentric makeup artist (Emily Mortimer), a mysterious security team, and a fashion stylist carrying designer bags.

California to Tuscany: A Visual Feast

Jays journey spans from the sun-soaked beaches of Malibu to the romantic streets of Paris, the majestic Alps, the Italian Riviera, and the charming villages of Tuscany. Production designer Mark Tildesley reveals the thought behind the iconic locations.

Malibu, California

The film opens with Jays luxurious home, a mid-century Modernist estate with a stunning pool and sweeping views, previously owned by Jack Nicholson. Tildesley explains that the goal was to balance the homes star-studded aesthetic with a hint of lived-in warmth, creating a space that felt both glamorous and personal. Interiors that couldnt accommodate the directors shots were recreated on a studio set at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England.

Milano Centrale

After arriving in Paris, Jay finds his daughter has already moved on to Italy. The comedic chaos begins as his entourage adapts from private jet travel to the cramped environment of a European train. Scenes were filmed at Milans main station, using a mix of authentic vintage train cars and studio recreations. One highlight is the Arlecchino, a high-speed train designed by Gio Ponti in 1960. A dramatic sequence involves Jay chasing a thief through fields and a cemetery, which was meticulously built from polystyrene and plaster by the production team.

Pienza, Tuscany

The final leg of Jays journey leads to Pienza, a Renaissance village near Siena, where he attends the Tuscan Arts Festival to accept an award. Tildesley chose Pienza for its picturesque central square, ideal for the festival scenes. Clooney and Sandler stayed at La Bandita Townhouse, a converted convent, and pre-party dinners were filmed at the Argiano wine estate in Montalcino, surrounded by vineyards and cypress-lined driveways. Visitors can still tour Argiano, enjoy tastings, and even stay in the restored 16th-century stables.

The goal was to piece together a journey using diverse spaces, not strictly replicating reality, Tildesley notes. Director Noah Baumbach worked closely with the design team to ensure authenticity in every frame, blending cinematic artistry with real-world charm.
