Jennifer Lopez vows to continue advocating for inclusivity while accepting Equity in Entertainment Award at THR Women in Entertainment Gala

Jennifer Lopez became emotional as she accepted the Equity in Entertainment Award at The Hollywood Reporters Women in Entertainment breakfast, presented by Lifetime. Taking the stage, she expressed deep gratitude, admitting she was overwhelmed following Kerry Washingtons introduction.

Lopez reflected on her journey, recalling how she often felt like the underdog. "As a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx, I wasnt expected to be in the room, much less at the center of it," she shared. She discussed the challenges of being typecast early in her career and the impact of playing Selena, a role that transformed her path in Hollywood.

She acknowledged trailblazing Latina women like Chita Rivera, Rita Moreno, Dolores Del Rio, and Katie Huvado, who paved the way for future generations. Lopez highlighted that despite progress, there remains resistance to Latina leads in major films and stressed the importance of continuing to challenge these barriers to inspire new audiences.

The award, established in 2016, recognizes individuals amplifying underrepresented voices in the entertainment industry. Previous honorees include Selena Gomez, Kerry Washington, Issa Rae, Ryan Murphy, Amy Pascal, Nina Jacobson, and Selma Blair.

Lopez also spoke about the significance of her work in Kiss of the Spider Woman, emphasizing its themes of empathy, survival, and humanity. She noted the storys enduring relevance, highlighting that issues of identity, power, and sexuality continue to demand nuanced understanding.

"Equity in entertainment is a relay," Lopez said, reflecting on her own experiences and mentorship. She credited Benny Medina for taking a risk on Selena and reiterated her commitment to fostering authentic representation across stories featuring Latinos, Black and brown talent, indigenous artists, LGBTQ+ communities, immigrants, women, non-binary individuals, and people with disabilities.

Lopez concluded her speech by pledging to continue advocating for inclusion: "Lets keep telling stories that liberate people, long before the world realizes how desperately it needs them."

Kerry Washington, who introduced Lopez, reminisced about their shared Bronx roots and the influence Lopez had on her own career. "Without Jennifer Lopez, there is no Kerry Washington," she stated, emphasizing Lopezs role in promoting diversity and creating opportunities for underrepresented communities.

The breakfast featured hosts and speakers including Rachel Sennott, Dakota Johnson, Sarah Paulson, Goldie Hawn, Regina Hall, Chase Infiniti, Jimmy Kimmel, and Molly McNearney. While Lopez received the Equity in Entertainment Award, Gwyneth Paltrow was honored with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award.

The event welcomed high school juniors and seniors from THRs Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program, connecting young women from underserved schools in Los Angeles with female executives in film and TV. Sponsors included Delta Air Lines, Medicube, Reyka Vodka, and Seven Bucks Productions, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, Entertainment Industry Foundation, Gersh, Chapman University, and Loyola Marymount University.
