Jessie J did not let the rules of royal etiquette prevent a heartfelt gesture toward Princess Kate. On Wednesday, December 3, the 37-year-old singer appeared on the British talk show This Morning and discussed why she chose to embrace the Princess of Wales, 43, during the Royal Variety Performance held on November 19 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

I was advised not to, but I just saw a mother who had also faced cancer publicly, and I wanted to give her a hug, Jessie J explained. She emphasized that her action was rooted in empathy, not royal protocol. It was that simple. I didnt approach her as the Princess of Wales, although I was respectful. I asked her, Can I give you a hug? and she accepted it, she added.

The singer continued, I just told her, Its inspiring. I thought about the challenges she might have faced, and I wanted to connect mom to mom, human to human.

Jessie J has previously shared her own health struggles, revealing in June that she had been diagnosed with early breast cancer. Similarly, Princess Kate publicly disclosed in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, later announcing in January 2025 that she was in remission.
