Molly McNearney, executive producer and co-head writer of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, reflected on her previous assumptions about free speech, admitting she naively believed the First Amendment was something she didnt need to actively consider until September 16, 2025. The next day, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr hinted at possible license revocations in response to Kimmels commentary on the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Speaking at The Hollywood Reporters 2025 Women in Entertainment breakfast, presented by Lifetime, McNearney described how she once took freedom for granted. I thought Id always have it, like a natural part of life. But freedoms, just like other parts of life, can end, she said. She referenced both the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade and the recent suspension of the show, emphasizing the fragile state of civil liberties today.
McNearney admitted she initially felt impostor syndrome addressing such a weighty topic. I created Mean Tweets for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and now Im speaking about the Bill of Rights? she joked. Her reflection led her to a larger realization: freedoms are compromised not by age or life changes, but by fear and distraction. Fear spreads quickly, but courage does too, she said, highlighting how colleagues, journalists, and activists continue to hold leaders accountable without hesitation.
She urged attendees to actively use their voices in defense of what is right. There are people suffering and facing injustice every day. They need us to speak up, she said, citing examples of women struggling with separation from children, healthcare access, bodily autonomy, and racial violence.
Introducing McNearney, Jimmy Kimmel humorously remarked that no one has restricted his speech more than she has, referencing personal anecdotes from their family life. Despite this, McNearney stressed the importance of standing firm. Even with repeated calls to cancel our show, we persisted. Your support helped us rise again. Continue to fight for your beliefs, speak freely, and challenge others. Our freedoms hinge on our willingness to use our voice, she concluded.
