Johnny Galecki from The Big Bang Theory Found Working on a Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Movie Frustrating

Before stepping away from Hollywood, "The Big Bang Theory" actor Johnny Galecki was no stranger to movie sets. However, while preparing for his role as Peter Brown in 2001's Vanilla Sky, he encountered a challenging situation caused by the film's secretive director.

"Cameron Crowe wouldn't hand out scripts, and I'm someone who likes to prepare, so I called him and said, 'You need to give me something to invest in, so I can show up ready,'" Galecki told AV Club. Crowes suggestion was unconventional: he told Galecki to listen to The Beatles. Galecki followed the advice but found it offered little practical help.

Galecki only received a page or two of the script at a time, and sometimes his character had no dialogue at all. This left him uncertain about how much of his work would make it into the final cut. Driven by curiosity, Galecki eventually watched Abre los ojos (1997), the Spanish film that inspired Vanilla Sky, even though Crowe had discouraged it. He described the film as eye-opening, saying, "I was blown away. Thats one incredible movie. I had to switch to cartoons sometimes just to calm down."

Despite the obstacles, Galecki enjoyed his time on set. He now believes Crowe was developing the script on the fly, which explained the director's reluctance to provide details and possibly contributed to the films unusual ending. Galeckis experience was made more enjoyable by spending time with the films glamorous crowd. "I got to hang around New York for a few weeks and play Boggle with supermodels," he said, adding humorously that "you cant complain about spending a month in New York playing Boggle with Shalom Harlow."

Working with Tom Cruise was a highlight for Galecki. He praised Cruise for being genuinely kind and supportive to his co-stars. "Tom Cruise was amazing a really, really nice guy," he recalled.

While Galeckis role in Vanilla Sky was relatively small, the experience proved rewarding. He contributed to a film that continues to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression.
