"The Last Frontier," the Apple TV series, wraps its debut season in a manner that perfectly mirrors the adventurous chaos of its beginning. The show, created by Jon Bokenkamp, follows U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick, portrayed by Jason Clarke, whose life is turned upside down when a transport plane carrying some of the nations most dangerous prisoners crashes in remote Alaska.
Remnick must navigate a world of escaped convicts while collaboratingand often clashingwith CIA agent Sydney Scofield (Haley Bennett) and the enigmatic criminal Havlock (Dominic Cooper). The series episodic inmate-of-the-week format gave Bokenkamp creative freedom in casting supporting roles, including the notorious stuntman and Jackass creator Johnny Knoxville.
Knoxville appears early in the series as S.T. Covington, a violent criminal with white supremacist ties. While his on-screen performance is intense and convincing, it was his behind-the-scenes antics that stole the spotlight. According to Bokenkamp, Knoxville orchestrated a prank that could have caused serious misunderstandings by sending the showrunner alarmingbut entirely fabricatedinformation about one of his co-stars.
The showrunner did not disclose which actor was targeted, but fans of Knoxvilles mischievous reputation wont be surprised. His behavior on set perfectly matched the chaotic energy he brings to his stunts.
Despite the prank, Knoxville delivered a compelling portrayal, complete with facial scars and tattoos that hint at Covingtons dark backstory. Bokenkamp recalls the experience with amusement: Johnny Knoxville started emailing me about another actors odd ideas for their character, from wardrobe choices to impractical props for the Alaskan climate. I was ready to intervene, only to realize I had been completely duped. I felt foolish, but also honored to be outsmarted by Johnny Knoxville.
The series also boasts standout performances from Jason Clarke and Alfre Woodward, making it a hidden gem among this years streaming options. Knoxville primarily interacts with younger actors like Kya Rose and Tait Blum, but his playful menace may have unnerved even the main cast behind the camera.
"The Last Frontier" is now available to stream on Apple TV, offering suspense, action, and a touch of Knoxvilles legendary mischief.
