The holiday season is upon us, with festive lights and decorated trees, but this year, the eerie world of Five Nights at Freddys returns just in time for Christmas. The follow-up to 2023s popular horror adaptation of the iconic video game series is taking an unconventional release route, arriving during the festive season instead of the traditional Halloween period.
At the Los Angeles premiere, Josh Hutcherson playfully remarked, Its basically like The Santa Clause, highlighting the films unusual timing. He added, A little bit of counterprogramming is fun I dont really celebrate Christmas myself, so if I were heading to the theater, Id choose a horror movie over a holiday film.
Co-star Matthew Lillard noted that Christmas is typically reserved for major releases, and following the first films success, Five Nights at Freddys qualifies for that category. Reflecting on the original movie, Lillard emphasized that Hollywood underestimated the franchises fanbase. Despite a simultaneous theater and streaming release in 2023, the film performed strongly without extensive promotional efforts. Now, with a bigger launch, the cast hopes it will generate both strong box office results and a swift approval for a third installment.
Director Emma Tammi confirmed that a trilogy is the aim, stating, Were hopeful we can continue, but it depends on the response to this one and fan demand. Were ready if the audience wants more.
Fans had expressed a desire for the sequel to be darker and include more jump scares. Tammi assured that these requests were taken seriously, noting, Weve really amped it up in this one. Hutcherson echoed this, admitting that audience feedback can be tricky, but in this instance, it inspired them to increase the scare factor. I enjoyed the first movie, but it wasnt as frightening as it could have been. We listened to the fans and made sure the sequel is more intense, he said.
Five Nights at Freddys 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday.
