Josh Hutcherson's reaction to Quentin Tarantino's accusation that "Hunger Games" copied "Battle Royale"

Josh Hutcherson has addressed Quentin Tarantinos critique regarding The Hunger Games. The director of The Hateful Eight recently accused author Suzanne Collins of drawing heavily from the Japanese novel and film Battle Royale when creating her young adult sci-fi series. Hutcherson, who played Peeta Mellark in the films, responded calmly to the comments.

"There are certainly overlapping ideas," Hutcherson told Variety. "But, honestly, inspiration comes from all directions."

Tarantino publicly highlighted the resemblance between the two works, both of which feature teenagers forced to fight in a brutal dystopian contest, during an episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. "The original Battle Royale is a novel. I dont understand how the Japanese author didnt sue Suzanne Collins over it," he said. "Its basically a direct lift from the book."

Collins had previously clarified that she was unaware of Battle Royale while writing The Hunger Games manuscript. "I hadnt heard of the book or the author until after I submitted my work," she told The New York Times in 2011. Her editor advised her not to read it so her story would remain original.

Hutcherson, known for his role as the supportive baker and love interest to Jennifer Lawrences Katniss Everdeen, appeared in the first four installments of the series. The franchise continued with the 2023 prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, focusing on the rise of Coriolanus Snow. A new prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, centered on Haymitch Abernathy, is scheduled for release in 2026.

"Im thrilled the series is moving forward and that the new cast is incredible," Hutcherson commented to Variety.

Outside of The Hunger Games, Hutcherson currently stars in Rachel Sennotts HBO comedy series I Love LA and appears in the horror film Five Nights at Freddys 2, set to release this Friday.
