Pop star Justin Bieber recently shared his annoyance with the dictation function on Apple iPhones, sparking widespread reactions on social media. The singer posted his complaints on both X and Instagram, highlighting how the feature often interferes with other phone functions.
Bieber described the problem with the dictation button, a text-to-speech tool that users frequently activate by accident. "If I hit this dictation button after sending a text and it beeps and stops my music one more time, I'm going to confront Apple directly," he expressed, also noting that even when dictation is disabled, the voice note option can still be triggered accidentally. He criticized the design for having multiple functions in the same location.
Alongside his comments, Bieber shared a screenshot of his iMessage screen to illustrate the issue. His posts received thousands of supportive responses, including one from Ian Silber, OpenAI's head of product design, who jokingly invited Bieber to join their weekly design review sessions.
The timing of Bieber's critique coincides with a turbulent period for Apple, which has seen several high-level executives announce departures. Earlier this week, John Giannandrea, senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy, revealed he will step down but remain an advisor until 2026. Alan Dye, Apple's vice president of human interface design, was appointed to lead Metas new creative studio in Reality Labs. Additionally, Apple announced that Lisa Jackson, vice president for environment, policy, and social initiatives, and Kate Adams, general counsel, will retire in the coming months.
Apple, a longtime leader in technology innovation, has faced challenges keeping pace with competitors like OpenAI, Meta, and Google in the fast-growing AI sector. OpenAI recently launched its own app store, signaling competition with Apple, and has collaborated with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on AI hardware projects, fueling speculation about potential devices that could rival the iPhone.
