Dr. Addison Montgomery is set to make her return to Seattle in the second half of Greys Anatomy Season 22, with Kate Walsh reprising her iconic role on the long-running medical drama.
Walsh originally appeared in the series during Season 1 as the estranged spouse of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), creating tension in his developing relationship with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). She became a regular cast member in Season 2 when Addison joined the hospital staff at Seattle Grace, attempting to revive her romance with Derek despite complications involving Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), Dereks former friend and Addisons former lover.
Their marriage eventually ended, and Walsh departed as a regular after Season 3. Nevertheless, she continued to appear periodically on the show, including leading the spinoff Private Practice, and returning for multiple episodes between Seasons 4 and 8. Her latest appearances were in Seasons 18 and 19, following nearly a decade away from the main series. During her most recent stint, Addison returned to assist Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) with training new OB/GYN residents in the episode Training Day.
According to reports, Walsh is scheduled to appear on Greys Anatomy again in an episode airing Thursday, January 29, although specific plot details about her storyline have not been disclosed. The show resumes the second half of Season 22 on Thursday, January 8, at 10/9c. The fall finale ended with a cliffhanger involving Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who was in the middle of a C-section while undergoing a heart operation with Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill).
Walsh is among several former cast members returning in Season 22, following Kelly McCrearys return as Maggie Pierce and Jesse Williams comeback as Jackson Avery.
Analysis: Dr. Addison Montgomery's Return to Grey's Anatomy
The return of Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) to Grey's Anatomy in the second half of Season 22 is generating significant buzz. Walsh, whose character was introduced in Season 1 as the estranged wife of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), has long been a fan favorite. After a complex storyline involving her troubled marriage to Derek and her complicated relationships with other characters, Addison’s character left the main series after Season 3. Despite this, she continued to make appearances in later seasons, including playing a lead role in the spinoff series *Private Practice*.
Her most recent return was in Seasons 18 and 19, where she came back to help train new OB/GYN residents. With her next appearance slated for January 29, viewers are eager to see what role she will play this time around. Specific plot details are still under wraps, but her involvement promises to add new layers to the ongoing narrative of the show. Notably, her return comes alongside other familiar faces, such as Kelly McCreary (Maggie Pierce) and Jesse Williams (Jackson Avery), whose return underscores the show’s commitment to celebrating its legacy while still evolving.
The continuation of the season promises dramatic moments, especially after the fall finale cliffhanger involving Jo Wilson’s (Camilla Luddington) high-risk surgery. Addison’s expertise in OB/GYN could tie into this storyline, though viewers will have to wait until January to see how her character’s arc unfolds.
