Theme park attractions shine when they let visitors step directly into the worlds of their favorite films, offering experiences far more vivid than any screen can provide. But how does it feel for an actor who actually starred in the movie? Ke Huy Quan recently gave us a glimpse during a trip to Disneyland with his Zootopia 2 co-star Ginnifer Goodwin.
Earlier, Quan and Goodwin appeared in a Disney Parks Instagram video showing that the character Clawhauser from Zootopia was joining photo spots at Disney California Adventure. A new video reveals that the duo also visited Disneyland itself, taking on the Indiana Jones Adventure ride. True to form, Quan wore the iconic hat associated with his beloved character, Short Round, making the experience all the more authentic.
The adventure was a delight to watch, and its easy to imagine Indiana Jones himself giving a nod of approval. The only minor letdown? Quan didnt keep his hat on during the ride, likely due to safety instructions from a Cast Member.
Before his recent breakout in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Quan was best known for playing Indiana Jones' loyal sidekick in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His performance remains one of the standout moments in that underrated chapter of the franchise.
On the ride, Quan and Goodwin tried to follow a playful no reaction rule. Riders are cast as explorers entering the Temple of the Forbidden Eye after Indiana Jones himself, encountering snakes, insects, and poison darts, while catching glimpses of Indy along the way. Quan ultimately broke the rule when a sudden burst of compressed air, simulating a dart, startled hima reaction anyone would understand!
While Short Round isnt officially part of the Indiana Jones Adventure, theres always hope for his inclusion in the future. A new Indiana Jones attraction, modeled after the Disneyland version but featuring a fresh storyline, is planned to replace Dinosaur at Disneys Animal Kingdom in the upcoming Tropical Americas land, with work scheduled to begin early next year. Perhaps Quan will return, hat in hand, to tackle this next adventure.
Actor's Perspective: Revisiting Iconic Roles at Disney Parks
For actors, revisiting their iconic roles through theme park attractions offers a unique and personal connection to their characters, beyond what audiences can experience through the screen. Ke Huy Quan’s recent visit to Disneyland with his co-star Ginnifer Goodwin provided an intriguing look into how he perceives the attraction as someone who once portrayed a beloved character. His interaction with the Indiana Jones Adventure ride at Disneyland is an interesting case study of how actors engage with their past roles in a theme park setting.
Quan, best known for his portrayal of Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," took the opportunity to relive the adventure, donning his iconic hat. This moment showcased a deeper layer of nostalgia, offering a direct connection between actor and character. However, as fun as the experience was, the minor limitation of not being able to keep the hat on during the ride due to safety protocols served as a reminder that even in the world of immersive theme park attractions, there are still real-world constraints.
Despite this small setback, the excitement of the experience was clear, with Quan and Goodwin’s playful reaction to the "no reaction" rule of the ride providing a lighthearted glimpse into their dynamic. As the ride simulated a dangerous journey through the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, Quan's natural reaction to the simulated darts was relatable and authentic, reinforcing the human element that actors bring to such experiences.
While Short Round is not a part of the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland, the upcoming changes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom offer a glimmer of hope that the character may be integrated into future attractions. With a new Indiana Jones-themed ride planned for the park, the possibility of seeing Quan reprise his role in a more interactive environment remains a tantalizing prospect for fans and visitors alike.
