Kenny Chesney Reveals Jimmy Buffett's Ashes Were Sneaked into His Rock Hall Tribute (with Family's Approval!)

During Jimmy Buffetts posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his friends found a special way to keep him part of the celebration. Musicians Kenny Chesney, James Taylor, and Mac McAnally honored the late star with a live performance, and unbeknownst to the audience, Buffetts ashes were on stage with them.

Chesney, 57, shared the story on Howard Sterns SiriusXM show on December 2, explaining that McAnally had been entrusted with some of Buffetts ashes by his daughter, Savannah. Backstage, Mac shows me a small urn he had in his coat pocket, Chesney recalled. So Jimmys ashes were there with us as he was being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Even after he passed, Jimmy found a way to join the celebration, Chesney added. The trio performed Buffetts 1974 hit Come Monday in front of a black-and-white photo of the Margaritaville legend. Taylor, 77, who inducted Buffett in the Musical Excellence category, said, Were three old friends of Jimmy Buffett, and we miss him. This is a song of his that we like a lot.

Chesney also reflected on his friendship with Buffett, recalling their first meeting by a hotel pool and later spending Christmas together in Key West. Its surreal to become friends with someone, collaborate with them, and have them inspire you. That was Jimmy for me, he said.

Buffett, who passed away from skin cancer in September 2023 at age 76, is survived by his wife Jane and their three children: Savannah, Delaney, and Cameron. His daughter Delaney honored his legacy by including his music in her directorial debut, Adult Best Friends. She explained, I always wanted to pay tribute to my dad in some way. His influence has shaped my life, and I wanted to honor that.

She added, He was a very unique person who found a niche. If I can work as hard as he did and bring happiness to people, Ill feel Ive done him proud.
