Kim Kardashian Reveals Why She Changed Her Original Name

Kim Kardashian recently opened up about why she decided to drop her full name just before the launch of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, sharing the surprising moment that led her to shorten Kimberly to the now-famous Kim.

In a conversation with Time, the reality star and entrepreneur clarified why she switched from Kimberly to Kim right before the reality show premiered in 2007. She revealed that she had always gone by Kimberly until that point.

I always went by Kimberly until we signed on for the show, she said. Seeing Kimberly Kardashian on the TV screen, she realized it felt too long. When I saw my name in the chyron, Kimberly Kardashian, I thought, Thats too much for people to say. Lets just go with Kim.

Kim admitted the change felt unusual at first since her family and childhood friends had always used her full name. However, the shorter version quickly stuck and eventually became one of the most recognizable names in popular culture.

In addition to discussing her name change, Kim revealed that she was the main force behind the Kardashian familys entry into reality television nearly twenty years ago. She explained that her siblings needed some persuasion to join the show.

The main reason we wanted to start the show was to highlight our DASH store thats what convinced my sisters to participate, she shared. I told them it would be excellent promotion for our store, and once they heard that, they agreed immediately.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians ran from 2007 to 2021, spanning 20 seasons and following Kim, Kris Jenner, Kourtney, Khlo, Kendall, Kylie, and Rob. Its tremendous success established the family as influential figures across multiple industries where they continue to thrive.
