Kim Kardashian Reveals Why She Changed Her Original Name

Kim Kardashian has opened up about the moment she decided to move away from her full name, Kimberly, revealing what inspired her to adopt the now-famous "Kim" before the premiere of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Speaking with Time, the reality star and businesswoman explained that she had always gone by Kimberly, but the change came in 2007, just as the family prepared to launch their groundbreaking reality series. I always used Kimberly until we signed on to do the show, she recalled. When I saw 'Kimberly Kardashian' on-screen, I thought it was too long. I decided to shorten it to Kim.

Initially, the shift felt unusual, as her family and childhood friends had always called her by her full name. However, the nickname quickly stuck and became one of the most recognized names in entertainment.

Kim also revealed that she played a key role in persuading her siblings to join the reality TV venture. According to the SKIMS founder, the idea of promoting their DASH store helped convince them. The main reason we started the show was to draw attention to our store, she said. Once I told my sisters that, they were on board immediately.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired from 2007 to 2021, spanning 20 seasons and following the lives of Kim, Kris Jenner, Kourtney, Khlo, Kendall, Kylie, and Rob. The shows enormous popularity helped catapult the family into a variety of business and media ventures where they continue to excel today.
