Kylie Jenner tries stem cell therapy for chronic back pain following Kim's positive results. What is it and how does it help?

Kylie Jenner revealed on Wednesday that she has been undergoing stem cell therapy to address her chronic back pain. The treatment, commonly associated with bone marrow transplants, involves harvesting stem cells from donors or the patients own body and injecting them into injured areas to aid healing and reduce inflammation.

Jenner shared on Instagram that her back pain started nearly three years ago during her pregnancy with her son Aire Webster and that conventional treatments provided little relief.

Seeing the relief Kim experienced encouraged me to explore stem cell therapy, Jenner wrote. Her sister Kim Kardashian previously shared her positive results from stem cell treatments for severe shoulder and back pain.

Kim posted that she experienced immediate relief and described the procedure as life-changing, saying, The unbearable pain is finally gone. For anyone dealing with chronic back pain, I highly recommend this therapy. Jenner, while not confirming full relief, praised the procedure as a significant step in her recovery. Everyone responds differently, but this has been crucial in my healing process, she noted.

Stem Cell Therapy: How It Works

Stem cells are unique cells capable of developing into various cell types such as bone, muscle, and blood cells, and can replicate indefinitely. Doctors obtain stem cells from sources like bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood, or embryos. For back pain, these cells can be injected into deteriorating spinal discs to support regeneration.

Stem cell treatments have existed in the U.S. since the 1960s, initially for blood cancers and genetic disorders, and have since expanded to conditions including broken bones and neurodegenerative diseases. However, many stem cell therapies remain experimental, with numerous clinics offering unproven treatments. Such procedures are often not covered by insurance and carry risks, including infection or permanent disability.

Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration only approves stem cell products made of hematopoietic progenitor cells, intended for blood disorders like leukemia.

Kardashians and Stem Cell Clinics

Both Kylie and Kim visited Dr. Adeel Khan at Eterna Health for their treatments. The clinic promotes MuseCell Therapy, claiming the stem cells can transform into specific tissues needed for repair and regeneration. Kim reportedly traveled to Mexico for treatment, as these stem cells are not FDA-approved in the United States. The clinic operates in Toronto and collaborates with scientists globally, including in the U.S., Mexico, Dubai, Italy, and Japan.

While Jenner has not disclosed the exact location or specifics of her therapy, she shared her progress on Instagram, describing it as a meaningful step in alleviating her back pain.

Author's Analysis: Kylie Jenner’s Stem Cell Therapy Journey

Kylie Jenner’s recent disclosure about undergoing stem cell therapy highlights both the growing interest in regenerative medicine and the continued experimental nature of these treatments. Her chronic back pain, which began during pregnancy nearly three years ago, had resisted conventional therapies, prompting her to explore alternative options.

The therapy involves injecting stem cells, either harvested from the patient or donors, into injured areas to support tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation. While Jenner cites significant improvement, she acknowledges that outcomes vary, emphasizing the individualized response to such treatments.

It is important to note that most stem cell therapies for musculoskeletal conditions remain unapproved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Procedures offered by clinics, such as Eterna Health, may carry risks including infection or long-term complications, and are generally not covered by insurance. The Kardashians’ experiences illustrate both the potential benefits and the experimental nature of these interventions.

Jenner’s public sharing serves as a case study in the current landscape of stem cell therapy: promising for some, yet still lacking broad clinical validation. Her update reinforces the need for cautious optimism and continued research in regenerative treatments for chronic pain.
