Leonardo DiCaprio Clarifies Speculation About "Titanic" Regrets Following Comments on "Boogie Nights"

Earlier this year, Leonardo DiCaprio spoke with director Paul Thomas Anderson in a lengthy Esquire interview, revealing that his "biggest regret" was passing on the role of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights, which ultimately went to Mark Wahlberg.

"It was such an important film for my generation. I cant picture anyone other than Mark in that role," DiCaprio said. "Watching it finally, I realized its truly a masterpiece."

For context, Boogie Nights was released in 1997. DiCaprio turned down the role because he had already committed to a smaller project at the time: Titanic. That film, of course, became a global phenomenon and propelled him to unprecedented fame.

After the Esquire comments, some speculated that DiCaprio regretted choosing Titanic over Boogie Nights. However, in a recent interview with Deadline, the 51-year-old actor made it clear that this is not the case.

"I have no regrets about doing Titanic. Looking back, I feel immense gratitude for being part of that film and for the opportunities it opened up for me. It allowed me to guide my own career path," he explained.

DiCaprio further clarified that his earlier remarks about Boogie Nights were meant purely as admiration for Paul Thomas Andersons work. "I said it from the perspective of being a longtime fan, appreciating Pauls journey as a filmmaker and the thought-provoking films he has created since," he said. "It was never about regretting my choices."

Nearly three decades after passing on Boogie Nights, DiCaprio finally collaborated with Anderson on One Battle After Another, an action thriller praised as one of 2025s standout films and expected to earn DiCaprio another Oscar nomination.

Reflecting on his career, DiCaprio seems content with how things have unfolded. Every step, he notes, has led him to the right opportunitieswithout a hint of regret.
