Marking a decade since the death of Scott Weiland, the iconic Stone Temple Pilots frontman, fans are finally hearing a song from his personal archive for the first time. The track, titled If I Could Fly, was initially released for Record Store Days Black Friday and is now available on all streaming platforms.
Weilands official social media account described the release as the first unheard song from Scotts archive since he left us. The post explained that the track was written in 2000, shortly after the birth of his son, Noah.
In the chorus, Weiland sings to his newborn son: If I could fly I would pick you up and keep you safe from the headlights. If I could fly I would lift you up and pull you out of the mudslide.
Scott Weiland passed away on December 3, 2015, at 48 due to an accidental drug overdose. Until now, his estate had not released any posthumous material from his archives, making If I Could Fly a highly anticipated debut of previously unheard music.
The release has been described as personal, raw, and a reminder of the heart that ran through all his work. Weilands legacy, spanning Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, numerous awards, and over 50 million albums sold, is highlighted by tracks like this that continue to connect fans across generations. The song is said to bridge two generations and offers a rare glimpse into the artists private world.
Alongside the release, Noah Weiland, now 25 and a singer himself, will honor his father with a tribute concert in Orange County, California. The performance will feature Scotts most famous songs as well as some lesser-known tracks. Jakob Nowell, son of the late Sublime singer Bradley Nowell, will also be part of the event.
Reflections on Scott Weiland's Legacy: A Posthumous Song and a Tribute
The release of "If I Could Fly," a previously unheard song from Scott Weiland’s personal archive, marks a poignant moment for fans and music lovers alike. After a decade since the iconic frontman’s passing, this track, written in 2000, gives a rare insight into the artist’s personal life, specifically his emotions as a new father. The heartfelt lyrics, which express a deep desire to protect his son from life's dangers, bring us closer to understanding the vulnerability behind Weiland’s complex persona.
What makes this release significant is not just the song itself, but the context in which it arrives. Weiland’s estate had kept his posthumous works under wraps until now, making "If I Could Fly" the first offering of its kind since his tragic death in 2015. The song resonates with raw emotion and personal reflection, a powerful reminder of the heart that permeated much of Weiland’s musical output throughout his career, both with Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver.
The release is not only a gift to long-time fans but also a bridge between generations. The connection to his son, Noah, now a young adult, adds another layer of emotion to the song’s significance. Noah’s upcoming tribute concert, which will celebrate his father’s legacy, further solidifies this moment as one of both remembrance and continuation. With performances from both Noah and Jakob Nowell, the son of Bradley Nowell of Sublime, the tribute will undoubtedly serve as a powerful acknowledgment of Scott Weiland’s enduring influence on rock music and the generations he continues to inspire.
