MAGA Supporters Are Outraged After College Student Receives F Grade on Poorly Written Paper

A University of Oklahoma student, Samantha Fulnecky, recently received a failing grade on her essay, prompting her to file a complaint claiming religious discrimination. The incident has ignited widespread online debate regarding the essay, the instructors response, and the grade itself.

The controversy began after the conservative group Turning Point USA shared Fulneckys essay and the feedback from her instructor on X, which has since gone viral, garnering nearly 44 million views.

Fulnecky's assignment was a reaction paper on a psychology article discussing gender stereotypes in middle school students and their mental health impacts. Instead of addressing the article, her essay focused on religious perspectives, including statements such as: The article discussed peers using teasing as a way to enforce gender norms. I do not necessarily see this as a problem and Society pushing the lie that there are multiple genders and everyone should be whatever they want to be is demonic. She also claimed that Women naturally want to do womanly things because God created us with those womanly desires in our hearts.

Fulnecky did not cite the Bible directly but paraphrased her interpretations. The instructor, Mel Curth, provided feedback stating points were deducted not due to her beliefs but because the paper failed to answer the assignment questions, contradicted itself, relied on personal ideology over scientific evidence, and contained offensive statements. A second instructor reportedly reviewed the essay and agreed with the grading.

The online reaction has been intense. Many users argue that the failing grade was justified given the essays lack of adherence to the assignments requirements and the absence of credible sources. Critics emphasized that religious texts are not peer-reviewed academic sources and supported the instructors assessment.

On the other hand, some conservative commentators have defended Fulnecky, claiming the grading reflects bias against her religious beliefs. Turning Point USA called for the professor to be fired, alleging viewpoint discrimination and violations of First Amendment rights.

The University of Oklahoma stated that the situation is under review, and the graduate student instructor who graded the essay has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
