Man allegedly swallows $20,000 Faberge egg, later recovered

Authorities in New Zealand successfully recovered a green Faberg egg adorned with diamonds after monitoring a suspect for six days, following allegations that he ingested the item. The 32-year-old allegedly swallowed the egg last week at a store in Auckland, the nations largest city, but was apprehended before leaving the premises.

"The pendant has been recovered and is now secured in police custody," officials confirmed in a statement on Friday.

Law enforcement had stationed an officer to supervise the man while waiting for him to naturally expel the valuable item, estimated at around $20,000. The egg is a special edition locket inspired by the James Bond movie "Octopussy," which features a plot centered on the theft of a rare Faberg egg.

According to charging documents, the man was formally accused on November 29 of stealing the Faberg x 007 Special Edition Octopussy Egg Surprise Locket.

The locket replicates the Faberg egg from the 1983 film "Octopussy." Its exterior features an 18k gold lattice adorned with blue sapphires and white diamonds arranged in a floral pattern. The 3.3-inch egg sits on a stand and opens to reveal an 18ct yellow gold octopus decorated with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes, a nod to the villain of the movie.

Faberg, the Russian jewelry house famed in the late 19th century, became renowned for crafting lavish Easter eggs with gold and precious gems. Recently, a rare crystal and diamond Faberg egg created for the Russian royal family fetched $30.2 million at a London auction, setting a new record.
