Margot Robbie has responded to the criticism surrounding her and Jacob Elordis casting in Emerald Fennells upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The Oscar-nominated actress defended her portrayal of Catherine Earnshaw and Elordis role as Heathcliff, encouraging audiences to watch the film before forming opinions.
Defending the Casting Choices
Fennells adaptation of Emily Bronts 1847 classic has faced scrutiny since the casting announcements. In the novel, Catherine Earnshaw is a brunette teenager, whereas Robbie, 35 and blonde, portrays an older version of the character in her late 20s to early 30s. Robbie acknowledged the controversy, stating, I get it. Theres nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie.
Jacob Elordis casting as Heathcliff attracted criticism due to the character being described as dark-skinned in the book. Robbie, however, expressed confidence in his performance, saying, I saw him play Heathcliff. And he is Heathcliff. Id say, just wait. Trust me, youll be happy.
She also praised his talent, calling him incredible
and comparing him to Daniel Day-Lewis for their generation.
The Directors Perspective
Emerald Fennell explained her choice of Robbie for Cathy, emphasizing the characters complex personality. Cathy is a star. Shes willful, mean, a recreational sadist, a provocateur It was about finding someone who you would forgive in spite of yourself. Its difficult to find that supersized star power. Margot comes with big energy. Thats what Cathy needs.
Addressing the Films Provocative Marketing
Some critics have focused on the movies bold promotional material, such as an early image featuring Robbie with a finger in her mouth. Robbie reassured fans that while the film contains provocative elements, its heart is emotional. Everyones expecting this to be very, very raunchy. I think people will be surprised. Its more romantic than provocative Its that feeling when your chest swells or its like someones punched you in the guts.
