Matthew Perrys parents submitted a heartfelt letter to the court, describing those responsible for the actors death as greedy jackals. Suzanne and Keith Morrison sent the letter on Wednesday, December 3, prior to the sentencing of Dr. Salvador Plasencia.
Prosecutors reported that Plasencia, known as Dr. P in Santa Monica, pled guilty in July to four counts of distributing ketamine. Each count carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
In their letter, the Morrisons began by questioning, How do you measure grief? Can you possibly provide any rational accounting? They reflected on the depth of their loss, describing Matthew as a central figure in their lives whose struggles they tried desperately to shield him from.
They wrote about the pain caused by those who exploited him: And then those greedy jackals come out of the dark, and all the efforts are for naught; it all crashes down. Suzanne Morrisons ongoing grief, they noted, remains profound even two years after Matthews passing, describing it as a deep well without a visible bottom.
The letter detailed the emotional aftermath: There is a confusion of emotions. Anger seethes away down deep... And the dull ache goes on and on. Memories are like little knives. They recalled Matthews personality as brilliant, demanding, and captivating, whether as a TV star or as a spirited young man.
The Morrisons expressed frustration over Plasencias betrayal: Here is a man who studied for years to become a doctor... No one alive could have been unaware of Matthews struggles. But this doctor conspired to break his most important vows, repeatedly, sneaked through the night to meet his victim in secret. For what, a few thousand dollars?
They also highlighted the ongoing connection fans have with Perry, noting gifts left at his grave, and lamented that his life was cut short before a planned third act could unfold.
Matthew Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at 54, found unresponsive in his backyard hot tub. An autopsy determined that his death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine. Plasencia, who operated an urgent care clinic, admitted to distributing the drug. Prosecutors are seeking a 36-month prison term, while Plasencias legal team emphasized that he acted without sufficient understanding of ketamine therapy and the actors addiction, calling it the biggest mistake of his life.
Another person, Jasveen Sangha, also implicated in Perrys death, submitted a letter to the court seeking consideration for her sobriety ahead of her sentencing. She has been in custody since August 2024 and reached a deal with prosecutors regarding her role in providing the ketamine that led to Perrys overdose.
Commentary: The Weight of Grief and Accountability in Matthew Perry's Death
The letter submitted by Matthew Perry's parents to the court highlights the profound emotional toll of their son's tragic passing. Suzanne and Keith Morrison’s words reflect a grief that goes beyond personal loss, turning their focus on those responsible for enabling Perry's struggle with addiction. In their letter, the Morrisons described the individuals who exploited Matthew as "greedy jackals," underscoring the depth of their anger and the sense of betrayal felt by those closest to the actor.
At the heart of this tragedy lies a broken trust. Dr. Salvador Plasencia, a medical professional who took an oath to do no harm, admitted to distributing ketamine to Perry, an action that ultimately contributed to the actor's death. Despite his knowledge of Perry’s history with addiction, Plasencia chose to engage in illicit activities for monetary gain. The Morrisons’ letter, which painted the doctor's actions as an unforgivable betrayal, offers an important reminder of the ethical responsibilities that come with a medical license.
While the legal proceedings unfold, the emotional aftermath for Perry's family is impossible to measure. The grief described by the Morrisons reveals the lingering pain and frustration they experience daily, as well as the public’s continued connection to Matthew Perry. The court’s decisions, including the sentencing of Plasencia, will not erase the profound impact of this loss, but they serve as a step toward holding those responsible accountable.
Ultimately, this case is not just about the consequences of one person’s actions but about the larger systemic issues surrounding addiction, exploitation, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. As this tragedy continues to unfold in the courtroom, it is important to remember the human cost of such negligence, and to honor Perry’s memory by ensuring that similar mistakes are not repeated in the future.
