  3. Meta's massive data center construction sparks concerns about rising electricity costs: 'We didn't choose to have it here'

Louisiana officials hope a massive new data center will boost the regions economy, but many residents are increasingly worried about the drawbacks. Meta, the worlds eighth-largest company, is constructing a large artificial intelligence facility in Richland Parish, and locals say the project is already disrupting daily life and driving up expenses.

According to residents, nonstop construction noise and heavy traffic from trucks have become routine. Lisa Hopkins described the situation as overwhelming, noting that her familys monthly utility bill has risen by $13 compared to last year. Experts warn that the facilitys huge energy needs could also push gas prices higher.

Nearly a quarter of Richland Parishs population lives in poverty, and the cost of a $550 million transmission line required for the new center will be passed on to all 1.1 million Entergy customers throughout the state.

Meta reported $164.5 billion in revenue in 2024 and is investing $10 billion into the Louisiana project. A company spokesperson said Meta is actively involved in the community, allocating $1 million to assist low-income households with utility payments and setting aside $200 million for local infrastructure and school initiatives.

Energy specialists estimate that the data center will consume three times the annual electricity usage of New Orleans. Paul Arbaje from the Union of Concerned Scientists emphasized that state regulators must ensure both technology companies and utility providers cover their fair share of the costs associated with such developments.

Many locals feel excluded from the decision-making process. Its not fair. Its not something that we asked to be put here, Hopkins said. Resident Donna Collins added that she does not know anyone who felt they had meaningful input regarding the project.

Analysis: The Challenges and Concerns Surrounding Meta's New Data Center in Louisiana

As Louisiana officials hope the new $10 billion Meta data center will provide a boost to the local economy, the reality for many residents is less than promising. While the promise of job creation and infrastructure investment is undoubtedly appealing, the immediate effects on local communities in Richland Parish have sparked significant concern. Locals report constant disruptions from construction noise and increased traffic, which have already begun to disrupt daily life. Additionally, rising utility costs and the looming threat of higher gas prices are putting financial strain on households already struggling with poverty.

Despite Meta's efforts to assist low-income households through a $1 million utility assistance program and a commitment to funding local infrastructure projects, many residents feel left out of the decision-making process. With nearly a quarter of Richland Parish living below the poverty line, the massive energy demands of the new facility—estimated to consume three times the electricity of New Orleans—raise questions about the long-term sustainability of this project for the community. Energy specialists have warned that both technology companies and utility providers must share the responsibility for covering the costs associated with such large-scale developments.

The concerns of the locals are clear: they feel excluded from the process and burdened by the consequences. As the project progresses, it remains to be seen whether the promised economic benefits will outweigh the challenges faced by those living in the shadow of this massive infrastructure development.
