Metro station undergoes red and white transformation

The Metro station adjacent to Sunderland's football stadium has recently been refreshed with a striking red and white design, reflecting the teams iconic colors. Stadium of Light station now sports newly repainted stripes as part of a wider network-wide enhancement project.

Work included hand-painting panels and restoring the football clubs crests, which had previously deteriorated. Ian Gallagher, head of building service maintenance at Nexus, explained that several team members involved in the project are Sunderland supporters themselves, making the completion of the work especially meaningful.

The station was initially adorned with Sunderlands colors in 2017 and is among seven stations recently upgraded, alongside West Monkseaton, Cullercoats, Hadrian Road, Chillingham Road, Manors, and Long Benton.

Councillor Lindsey Leonard, cabinet member for environment, transport, and net zero at Sunderland City Council, highlighted the significance of the update: "Sunderland AFC is central to our citys heritage and identity, and this refresh clearly showcases the station as part of that connection."
