A micro sculptor claims to have surpassed his own world record by crafting the tiniest handmade sculpture ever recorded. David A. Lindon, based in Bournemouth, Dorset, describes his newest creation, The Yellow Smiley Face, as "invisible to the naked eye," measuring just 11.037 by 12.330 microns.
The piece is placed on a micro dot atop a first-class stamp featuring the eye of the late Queen. This creation has now overtaken his previous record-holder, The Red Lego Brick. According to Lindon, the Yellow Smiley Face is "half the size of my Red Lego Brick artwork," which had previously held the record for the smallest handmade sculpture.
With a total of 12 Guinness World Records, Lindon is renowned for producing ultra-miniature art, including microscopic renditions of Van Gogh paintings on watch mechanisms that sold for 90,000.
For reference, the Red Lego Brick measured 0.02517mm by 0.02184mm. Lindon noted, "My Yellow Smiley Face is half the size of the Red Lego Brick, which was already four times smaller than the prior record." He added that the sculpture is comparable in size to a human blood cell, bacteria, mold spores, talcum powder, or a droplet of fog.
Other miniature works by Lindon include intricate animals sculpted inside the eye of a needle, ranging from a blue whale to a delicate peacock butterfly. "I probably am completely bonkers," he jokes.
The Yellow Smiley Face is displayed on a glass-mounted stamp, enclosed in a sealed glass case. Lindon expressed gratitude to Dr. Sarah Elliott and Jack Rose from Bournemouth University for verifying the measurements for the new world record.
He also revealed another micro sculpture depicting a graduation certificate held by a tiny hand, measuring less than a millimeter and set on a solid gold plinth. This artwork is intended as a gift to Bournemouth University to "inspire future generations."
Analysis: Pushing the Limits of Miniature Art
David A. Lindon has once again redefined the boundaries of micro sculpture with his latest creation, The Yellow Smiley Face. Measuring just 11.037 by 12.330 microns, it surpasses his previous record-holder, The Red Lego Brick, by being half its size. The sculpture's dimensions place it among the tiniest objects visible only through a microscope, comparable to a human blood cell or a droplet of fog.
Lindon's achievement highlights not only his precision but also the increasing role of scientific collaboration in art. Verification by Dr. Sarah Elliott and Jack Rose from Bournemouth University ensures that this record meets rigorous standards, reinforcing the credibility of such ultra-miniature works.
With 12 Guinness World Records already under his belt, Lindon's approach demonstrates the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern measurement technology. His latest projects, including a miniature graduation certificate on a gold plinth, continue to inspire both the art community and future generations of creators, showing that innovation can thrive even at the microscopic scale.
