Mortal Kombat actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa passes away, reason for death disclosed

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, known for his iconic role in Mortal Kombat, has passed away at the age of 75. Born in Tokyo, Tagawa began his acting career in 1986 and gained recognition through performances in films such as Licence to Kill, The Phantom, as well as TV series including The Man in the High Castle and Disney productions like Johnny Tsunami and Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board.

Tagawas publicist, Penny Vizcarra, confirmed that the actor died in Santa Barbara due to complications from a stroke.

Coming from a military family, Tagawa spent his childhood moving between various cities. After relocating to Southern California, he discovered a passion for acting during his high school years. He previously reflected on how his upbringing was shaped by the Japanese internment policies following World War II, saying that Japanese individuals were not well-received during that period. Tagawa described his mindset, stating that he always embraced challenges and defied odds, even when the situation seemed impossible.

He made his film debut in 1986 with Big Trouble in Little China and Armed Response, but his major breakthrough came with the role of Chang in The Last Emperor (1987). That same year, he appeared on popular TV shows including MacGyver, The Colbys, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Before his passing, Tagawas most recent work included Blue Eye Samurai (2023), in which he played Master Eiji, as well as an appearance on NCIS: Los Angeles. His likeness was also featured in the 2023 video game Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
