Mother Informed Children of Father's Abandonment. 55 Years Later, His Body Discovered Buried in the Basement.

George Carroll, a Korean War veteran, vanished from his Long Island residence in 1963, leaving his four children searching for answers for decades. His wife, Dorothy, always told the children that their father had abandoned the family.

After years of pursuing leads, including family theories and a psychic's guidance, the Carroll children finally uncovered the truth: their father had been buried beneath their family home all along.

Chris Carroll, normally composed, appeared pale and shaken as he emerged from the basement of the Lake Grove, Long Island, house. Dad, I think we found something, he told his father, Michael, urging him downstairs. Together with his brother Mike Jr., Chris had spent months excavating the basement, determined to solve the mystery of their grandfather George Carrolls disappearance decades earlier.

Michael, who had recently suffered a stroke, needed support walking down the stairs but managed to look into the large hole they had dug. I thought it might be a root or a dog bone, he recalled. Then I realized it was definitely a pelvis bone. Though grim, the discovery finally provided the family with long-awaited closure.

In 1963, Michaels 30-year-old father disappeared without a trace, leaving Dorothy and four children under ten. Family stories suggested he had left to buy cigarettes and never returned. Dorothy never offered an explanation, maintaining this version of events until her death in 1998.

Guided by family speculation and a psychic who predicted a body buried beneath the house, Michael and his sons uncovered their fathers remains. Our father was in the ground for 55 years while we thought he abandoned us, said George's eldest son, Steven Carroll. But he had been murdered.

The familys story is now featured in the documentary The Secrets We Bury, which premieres on ID and streams on HBO Max. The film chronicles how the siblings sought closure after decades of uncertainty. It is rare to see people love each other so well through such dark, terrible circumstances, said director Patricia E. Gillespie.

George Carroll, a New York native, returned home after serving in the Korean War, where he even served as Marilyn Monroe's driver on a USO tour. Settling on Long Island with Dorothy, he raised their daughters Jean and Patricia and sons Steven and Michael. By 1963, a handyman named Richard Darress was living with the family to assist with home projects.

Soon after George's disappearance, Dorothy married Darress. Their marriage ended in divorce, but the children recalled abuse during that time. Questions about Georges whereabouts remained unanswered, as Dorothy dismissed inquiries and did not report him missing. Some speculated George had started a new family after the war, while others suggested foul play.

In the mid-2000s, Michael met his uncle at a hospital, who mentioned suspicions that George had been killed and buried beneath the house. Motivated by this, Michael and his siblings began investigating, ultimately turning to a psychic in 2010. The psychic claimed George was murdered and buried in the basement, giving specific details about the location, which Michael confirmed from memory.

This led Chris and Mike Jr. to excavate the basement, where they found George Carrolls skeletal remains. On October 25, 2019, the family held a military funeral on Long Island, honoring George. While Suffolk County Police continue investigating the case, the family suspects the late Richard Darress was responsible for Georges death. For the Carrolls, finally discovering his remains brought peace. We found the prize. He was still here, Michael said.

The Secrets We Bury premiered on ID on December 16 and is available for streaming on HBO Max.
