‘Obsession’ Teaser: A New Horror Festival Breakout is Here

Over the last ten years, Hollywoods horror scene has seen creators like Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger transition from comedy to acclaimed genre filmmaking. In 2026, audiences may be welcoming a new talent to that list: Curry Barker. Barker, known for the Thats a Bad Idea YouTube channel and his viral $800 short film Milk & Serial, made his feature film debut with Obsession, a modern take on the classic monkeys paw horror story that became one of the standout hits of the fall festival season. A recently released teaser gives a glimpse of what audiences can expect when it hits theaters next spring.

Written and directed by Barker, Obsession follows Michael Johnston as a romantically awkward young man who turns to a vintage wish-granting toy to make his crush, played by Inde Navarrette, become infatuated with him. The supporting cast features Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. The film made its premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and subsequently screened at major genre festivals, including Fantastic Fest and Sitges. It received early critical acclaim, leading Focus Features to acquire the project in a rare, high-profile festival deal.

IndieWires TIFF review highlighted the films simple yet compelling premise: Bear, a shy music store employee, lacks the courage to confess his feelings to his co-worker and childhood friend Nikki. Instead of being honest, he purchases a One Wish Willow, a 1960s antique toy claiming to grant one wish when a branch is broken. The store clerk cautions that previous buyers often regret their wishesbut of course, it wouldnt be much of a horror story if he heeded the warning.

Obsession is scheduled for theatrical release by Focus Features on May 15, 2026. The first teaser trailer is now available for viewers.
