Opinion: The British Spy Novelist Adored by Other Spies - A Review

John le Carr's literary creations stood in stark contrast to James Bond. While both le Carr and Ian Fleming, Bond's creator, shared backgrounds as British intelligence operatives, le Carrs heroes were far from action-driven icons. Instead, they were morally complex individuals entangled in circumstances beyond their control.

Le Carrs own intelligence career was marked by secrecy and betrayal, including interrogating defectors from the Soviet bloc and reporting on communist peers during his time at Oxford University.

The book Tradecraft accompanies an Oxford museum exhibition of the same name, open until April 2026. It explores le Carrs professional journey using his personal archives, insights from experts, and recollections from collaborators such as journalist Michela Wrong and filmmaker Errol Morris. Readers are taken across global locations, from Cornwall to the Congo, and Phnom Penh to Perm, Russia, tracing the path of his life and work.

Le Carr, who passed away in 2020, became disillusioned with British foreign policy and ultimately believed that espionage had little impact on the outcome of the Cold War. Despite his skepticism, his novels were highly regarded among intelligence professionals.

He also contributed to spy terminology, popularizing terms such as tradecraft for covert techniques, mole for infiltrators, and honeytrap for sexual blackmail schemes. His work often reflected the intersection of life and art, sometimes in deliberate ways.
