  3. Oscar Contender 'The Librarians' to Headline Winter Season of PBS Series 'Independent Lens'

PBSs Emmy-winning documentary series Independent Lens, produced by ITVS, has revealed its winter season schedule, featuring the Oscar-contending film The Librarians as the centerpiece. Directed by Kim A. Snyder, the documentary offers an unflinching look at the growing conflicts over book bans across the United States and will debut on Independent Lens on February 9.

Executive produced by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, the film originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last January. It highlights the experiences of librarians in public schools and libraries who have been challenged by advocacy groups like Moms for Liberty, which aim to regulate the books available to children.

A press release for the winter lineup notes, Told through the eyes of women on the frontlines, the film captures the high stakes when access to literature becomes a battleground. The season also includes Viviens Wild Ride, The Inquisitor, and Keep Quiet and Forgive, all of which center on women-led stories of courage, resistance, and self-discovery.

Lois Vossen, founding executive producer of Independent Lens, commented, Our documentaries delve into the layers beneath the surface, connecting past and present. Films like Viviens Wild Ride and The Inquisitor present personal journeys, while Keep Quiet and Forgive and The Librarians tackle national stories. Each provides audiences with nuanced, empathetic portraits of remarkable yet ordinary Americans.

The winter films will also be part of the long-running Indie Lens Pop-Up community screenings, which have engaged nearly 500,000 viewers nationwide. Over 200 in-person and virtual events are scheduled across almost all 50 states as part of the series 20th season.

All films will be available for streaming on the PBS app and the PBS YouTube channel on their premiere dates.
