Paul Mescal, the Irish actor known for his moving performances in projects like Normal People and All of Us Strangers, recently addressed whether he plans to step away from emotionally intense roles. Fans of his heartfelt portrayals will be glad to hear he isnt ruling them out.
At 29, Mescal has taken on deeply emotional characters in films such as Hamnet and The History of Sound, as well as his earlier television work. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he reflected on the possibility of moving beyond these types of roles, referencing his characters Will, Lionel, Connell, and Harry.
I dont know if Ill have more to say with roles like Will or Lionel or Connell or Harry, he said. I recognize that they are in conversation with each other, and theres obviously some sort of artistic compulsion that I feel to be in that territory. I dont know if Im finished with that yet, but I might be finished with that?
Speaking with PEOPLE at a Hamnet event, Mescal joked about his earlier comments, saying, Don't ever quote me on the things that I quote myself on. He added that audiences often try to categorize actors, but for him, the priority is creating work that feels honest.
Hamnet tells the story of William Shakespeare (Mescal) and his wife Agnes (Jessie Buckley), exploring their love, family life, and the grief that follows the death of their son Hamnet. Shakespeare channels his sorrow into writing the tragedy Hamlet. Directed by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, the film also features Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson.
Mescal described the emotional arc of the film, noting, The only reason that this film is sad is because there's real joy and levity in it in the first half of the film, and I think it's kind of a bigger point. He called it probably the project he is most proud of, praising the connection he shared with Buckley on set.
We were able to communicate nonverbally, which is a first for me, Mescal said. Buckley reflected on the positive atmosphere during filming: We approached it with intention, but with the lightest of touches. We really were like a family, laughing a lot amidst everything else, so it felt alive.
Looking ahead, Mescal will portray Paul McCartney in director Sam Mendess four-part cinematic series about The Beatles, The Beatles A Four-Film Cinematic Event. Hamnet is currently in select theaters and will expand on December 5.
