After returning to Chicago, he collaborated with jazz and blues legends such as Ramsey Lewis, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, The Dells, and Etta James. His first single, You Cant Sit Down (Parts 1 & 2), was released in 1961.

Alongside his wife, Upchurch established a Christian Music Marriage Ministry, supporting young musicians in achieving their educational goals through the Jimmy Smith Foundation, in partnership with The Jackie Robinson Foundation. He was also an author, having published two books and working on his autobiography at the time of his passing.
