Phil Upchurch, the versatile guitarist known for collaborating with Michael Jackson, Curtis Mayfield, and Quincy Jones, passed away on November 23 in Los Angeles. He was 84 years old.

Throughout his prolific career, Upchurch recorded close to 30 albums and contributed to over 1,000 tracks alongside some of the most celebrated names in the music industry. Notable among his works are Chaka Khans hit Im Every Woman, which topped the Billboard R&B charts for three weeks in 1978, and Michael Jacksons Workin Day and Night from the 1979 album Off the Wall.

Upchurchs talents were featured on all of Donny Hathaways solo albums, as well as on Curtis Mayfields iconic soundtracks including Superfly, Claudine, Lets Do It Again, and Sparkle. He also composed George Bensons single Six to Four.

Born and raised in Chicago, Upchurch was introduced to music by his father, a jazz pianist, who gave him a ukulele at the age of 13. This sparked his journey into music, eventually mastering guitar, bass, and drums. He drew inspiration from jazz legends like Oscar Peterson and Jimmy Smith and began his professional career touring with The Spaniels after finishing high school in 1958.

In the mid-1960s, Upchurch served two years in the U.S. Army in Germany as a radio reporter while performing with the units glee club. Returning to Chicago, he became a sought-after session musician, working with jazz and blues artists such as Ramsey Lewis, John Klemmer, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, The Dells, and Etta James. He released his first single, You Cant Sit Down (Parts 1 & 2), during this period.

Beyond his musical achievements, Upchurch was also an author, publishing two books and working on an autobiography at the time of his passing.
