  3. Physician who illegally sold ketamine to 'Friends' actor Matthew Perry receives prison sentence

The Los Angeles-based doctor who provided ketamine to "Friends" star Matthew Perry prior to his 2023 overdose has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison. Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who has voluntarily surrendered his medical license, pleaded guilty in July to four counts of illegally distributing the prescription anesthetic in connection with Perry's death.

Plasencia, formerly the operator of an urgent care clinic in Calabasas, California, is the first of five individuals involved in the case to receive sentencing. During the federal court hearing in Los Angeles, he addressed Perry's family, expressing remorse and stating, "I'm just so sorry."

Following the Dec. 3 sentencing, Plasencias attorneys described him as accepting the outcome with "humility and deep remorse." They emphasized that the mistakes he made during the 13 days of treating Perry will remain with him permanently. The legal team highlighted that Plasencia voluntarily gave up his medical license and aims to continue contributing to his community while helping other doctors avoid similar errors.

His attorneys also defended his character, describing him as a "compassionate, caring, and conscientious doctor" whose clinic served a vital role in the community. They stressed that while he made serious errors in the off-label use of ketamine, he "is not a villain" and was respected by his patients.

Other individuals involved in the case include Jasveen Sangha, referred to by prosecutors as the "Ketamine Queen" of North Hollywood, who allegedly supplied Perry with the ketamine that contributed to his death.

Dr. Salvador Plasencia's sentencing to 30 months in federal prison marks a significant turning point in the legal aftermath of Matthew Perry's tragic death. The Los Angeles-based doctor, who admitted to illegally distributing ketamine to Perry prior to his fatal overdose in 2023, has now faced the legal consequences of his actions. While Plasencia’s sentencing is a key moment in this ongoing case, it also highlights a broader issue in the healthcare system regarding the misuse of prescription medications.

Plasencia's voluntary surrender of his medical license and his expressions of remorse during his sentencing reflect a man deeply regretful of his actions. His legal team has stressed that his intentions were never malicious, presenting him as a compassionate doctor who made critical errors in judgment. However, the use of ketamine outside of its approved medical context raises serious concerns about patient safety, and the consequences of such missteps are now clear. For Plasencia, this will remain a personal and professional failure that will be difficult to overcome.

Looking at the broader picture, Plasencia is the first of five individuals involved in the case to be sentenced. This case underscores the growing scrutiny surrounding off-label drug distribution and the responsibilities of healthcare providers in preventing harm. As we await the sentencing of others involved, it’s clear that this incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with the improper administration of powerful substances like ketamine.

The community impact of Plasencia's actions cannot be ignored. While he was described as a respected figure in his field, this case highlights the need for better oversight and stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents. His remorse may be sincere, but the long-term consequences of his mistakes will affect not only his own life but also the lives of those he swore to care for.
