A Sussex-based airline pilot and author is gifting three books to every Year 2 pupil across the Isle of Wight. Rob Johnson aims to inspire children with his stories about the adventures of pilots Ollie and Polly, hoping to foster a lifelong passion for reading.

This initiative targets the island's challenges with age-appropriate reading levels. According to past reports, about one in three children on the Isle of Wight lag behind in reading when entering secondary school.

The Isle of Wight Council emphasized that improving literacy remains one of its top priorities. Johnson unveiled his project at Dover Park Primary School in Ryde, planning to donate a total of 4,500 books.

"Nationally, 24% of children struggle to meet expected reading levels, and on the Isle of Wight, the figure is closer to 33%," Johnson explained. "By providing each Year 2 student with three copies of the 'Let's Go See' series, we hope to support both teachers and schools."

Headteacher Jon Kirby noted the excitement among pupils. "Children are arriving at school with increasingly varied starting points and more speech and language needs," he said. "Opportunities to read or be read to are crucial, which is why these books are so valuable."

The books draw inspiration from Johnson's aviation career and will reach pupils in 36 schools. Johnson expressed his hope that students would not only read the books but also engage with related cartoons and involve their families in reading.

Johnson envisions expanding the program to schools throughout the UK. Local MP Joe Robertson praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of encouraging reading at home as well as at school.

An Isle of Wight Council representative reiterated the commitment to literacy. "While many children perform well in reading, overall literacy outcomes remain below the national average, especially at the end of primary school and at GCSE," they said. "Our Education Strategy (20252030) focuses on early reading, consistent literacy support, and swift intervention for students needing extra help."

Author's Perspective: Inspiring Early Literacy on the Isle of Wight

As someone who has spent years navigating the skies and the pages of storytelling, I see Rob Johnson’s initiative as a precise response to a pressing local need. By providing three books to every Year 2 pupil, he is addressing a literacy gap that affects roughly one in three children on the Isle of Wight—higher than the national average.

The choice to focus on early readers is deliberate. Year 2 is a pivotal stage when children consolidate foundational reading skills, and exposure to engaging, age-appropriate content can make a significant difference. Johnson’s aviation-themed stories, featuring pilots Ollie and Polly, are more than entertaining; they serve as tools to spark curiosity and build reading confidence.

Equally important is the approach to involve families and support teachers. Reading is not confined to the classroom, and the integration of cartoons and shared reading activities encourages a culture of literacy that extends beyond school walls.

Ultimately, this initiative represents a concrete step toward improving literacy outcomes. If successful on the Isle of Wight, it could serve as a scalable model for schools across the UK, demonstrating how targeted, engaging interventions can positively influence early reading skills.
