Plaque commemorates estate work of 'remarkable' couple

A devoted couple who played a key role in creating a community centre and adventure playground in Leicester have been recognized with a heritage panel. Don and Doris Connolly devoted decades to enhancing the New Parks estate, according to Leicester City Council. The commemorative plaque was revealed on Saturday outside New Parks Library on Aikman Avenue.

The Connollys were among the founders of the New Parks Residents' Association after settling in Pickwell Close in the 1950s. The council described them as passionate advocates for social improvement.

One of their eight children, Karen Laywood, reflected on her parents' legacy, saying they would have been very proud to see their contributions recognized in this way. The couple was instrumental in establishing the New Parks Community Centre on Oswald Road and the adventure playground on Glenfield Road.

Don Connolly also chaired the New Parks Community Project, while Doris Connolly volunteered at the community centre and organized an annual Christmas toy collection for local children. Following Doriss passing in 2010, the council named a street Connolly Close to honor the familys contributions.

The new heritage panel acknowledges the Connollys selfless efforts to improve the lives of New Parks residents. Both were lifelong members of the Communist Party, with Don leading the Leicester branch for 30 years. Don Connolly passed away in 2012 at the age of 85, and Doris died in 2009, also aged 85.

Assistant city mayor Councillor Vi Dempster praised the couple as community champions whose dedication over fifty years profoundly impacted the estate. She added, I was fortunate to know both Don and Doris. They were truly remarkable, dedicating their lives to improving the estate for others, even while raising eight children.

Karen Laywood noted the familys appreciation for the turnout at the unveiling and thanked the city council for installing the heritage panel.
