This article contains spoilers for episode 6 of Pluribus.
Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) has been enduring relentless misfortune since a mysterious alien virus transformed most of humanity into a collective hive mind. Already personally affected by the Others, who were indirectly responsible for the death of her manager and partner, Helen (Miriam Shor), Carol has been suspicious of their seemingly benign intentions. While the Others insist that such deaths are unavoidable accidents, Carol remains unconvinced, determined both to reverse the virus and to expose the true nature of the Others.
Episode 6 brings a shocking revelation: the hive mind is processing human corpses into a consumable substance. For Carol, this confirms the Others inhumanity, while other survivors, like Diabat (Samba Schutte), view the grim solution as a pragmatic response to food shortages caused by the Others' refusal to consume living food. This dark discovery is delivered in a moment made even more surprising and humorously unsettling by the cameo appearance of John Cena.
Cenas role draws on the series tradition of blending dark themes with comedic elements. It echoes the early work of showrunner Vince Gilligan, who, before mastering serialized drama with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, was known for his darkly humorous scripts on The X-Files and other projects. The juxtaposition of Cenas amiable persona with the macabre explanation of the Others activities creates a moment of black comedy that feels both shocking and fitting.
Episode 6, written by Vera Blasi, continues Pluribuss darkly comedic streak, with Carol casually discussing extreme solutions like acquiring a nuclear bomb. Cenas cameo amplifies this tone, combining his natural charm and affable demeanor with the unsettling realities of the shows world. His performance highlights how straight delivery of dark content can enhance its impact, perfectly matching the cheerful yet eerie attitude of the Others.
Featuring a major celebrity playing himself, Cena becomes the first high-profile guest star on Pluribus, adding an extra layer of uncanny realism to the series. His appearance deepens the unsettling atmosphere while reinforcing the strangeness of Carols environment and the narrative tension between humans and the hive mind.
As the season continues, viewers can expect more unexpected moments and revelations that test Carols resolve and expand the eerie, darkly comic universe of Pluribus.
