The Government of Jersey has outlined five main priorities aimed at strengthening assistance for carers, following a rapid review and feedback from families and community organizations.

The initiatives include the development of a comprehensive directory of services offered by both government and local groups, the creation of an informative leaflet and website containing clear guidance and contact information, and the organization of a Connect Me Carers event to link carers with available support providers.

Deputy Lyndsay Feltham, Minister for Social Security, emphasized her dedication to ensuring carers receive the appropriate support, particularly in the areas where it is most needed.

Additional priorities focus on a communications campaign to keep carers informed and the exploration of establishing a dedicated adviser who can provide assistance in person, over the phone, or via email.

The review also examined financial assistance for carers. Current support includes income assistance for low-income households and weekly payments such as 71.61 for Carer's Allowance, 31.29 for supplementary care costs, and up to 198.03 for personal care. Under the Social Security Scheme, Carer's Allowance provides 295.75 per week, while long-term care benefits may reach 1,451.13 weekly for care-related expenses.

Deputy Feltham stated, "Carers make an extraordinary contribution to our community. I want to reassure carers and their families that we are committed to ensuring they have the right support in place, concentrating on the areas of greatest need. This is just the start, and our efforts will continue to expand in the coming months."

A summary report of the initiatives is scheduled for release in January 2026.

Analysis: Strengthening Carer Support in Jersey

The Government of Jersey’s announcement outlines a clear, structured approach to supporting carers, reflecting feedback from both families and local organizations. The five priorities focus on improving access to information, enhancing communication, and providing direct support through events and potential dedicated advisers.

Financial assistance remains a key component, with current provisions such as Carer's Allowance and long-term care benefits offering a framework for household support. While the review does not introduce immediate changes to payment levels, it highlights the government’s commitment to evaluating and potentially expanding assistance in targeted areas.

Deputy Lyndsay Feltham emphasizes that these measures are just the beginning, signaling a sustained effort to strengthen the network of services available to carers. The upcoming summary report in January 2026 will provide further insight into progress and implementation of these initiatives.
