  3. Quentin Tarantino Criticizes the Least Skilled Actor in SAG

Quentin Tarantino didnt hold back in criticizing Paul Dano, calling him the weakest actor in Hollywood at least in his own words. On Bret Easton Elliss recent podcast, the filmmaker, known for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, delivered a harsh assessment of Dano, a Golden Globe nominee and two-time Emmy contender.

The critique came while Tarantino discussed his ranking of Paul Thomas Andersons 2007 film There Will Be Blood, which stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Dano, placing it fifth among his favorite 21st-century movies. According to Tarantino, the film could have ranked higher if not for what he described as a significant flaw: Danos performance.

[Dano] is weak sauce, man. He is the weak sister. [Daniel Day-Lewis] is eating him alive. Austin Butler would have been great in that role. [Dano] is just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy, Tarantino said, as reported by Variety. He elaborated that the film was intended to be a two-hander, but pairing Day-Lewis with what he called the weakest actor in SAG made it fall short.

Ellis defended Danos dual-role performance in the film, but Tarantino remained firm in his view. Im not saying hes terrible, Im saying hes giving a non-entity performance. I just dont care for him, he added.

The film won Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for Best Actor, though Tarantinos critique suggests it left him unimpressed by Dano. The actors notable projects include The Batman (2022), The Fabelmans (2022), and Love & Mercy (2014).

Separately, Tarantino named Ridley Scotts Black Hawk Down (2001) as his favorite film of the century so far, showing his preferences extend beyond recent Hollywood releases.

Commentary: Tarantino’s Harsh Critique of Paul Dano

Quentin Tarantino's recent comments on Paul Dano have sparked controversy, offering a rare glimpse into the director's unapologetic honesty about his views on acting. During an appearance on Bret Easton Ellis’s podcast, Tarantino did not hold back in calling Dano "the weakest actor in Hollywood" – a statement that has raised eyebrows in the industry. While Dano is a respected actor with a Golden Globe nomination and two Emmy nominations, Tarantino's sharp critique seems to stand in stark contrast to his critical success.

Tarantino’s remarks stemmed from his discussion of Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2007 film *There Will Be Blood*, where Dano plays a significant role alongside Daniel Day-Lewis. Despite ranking the film fifth on his list of favorite 21st-century movies, Tarantino expressed disappointment with Dano’s performance. In his view, Dano's portrayal of Eli Sunday was the film’s "weak sauce," an underwhelming performance that, in his opinion, weakened the film as a whole. The director even suggested that Austin Butler would have been a better fit for the role, further dismissing Dano’s abilities.

What stands out here is Tarantino's blunt critique that goes beyond merely expressing dissatisfaction; he describes Dano’s acting as "non-entity" and "uninteresting," which indicates a fundamental disconnect between the filmmaker and the actor's artistic contributions. While the film’s overall critical acclaim and Daniel Day-Lewis’s Oscar-winning performance may have overshadowed Dano’s role, Tarantino's candid assessment underscores his belief that the film could have been even more impactful if not for Dano’s "weak" performance.

Although Tarantino clarified that he does not consider Dano "terrible," he remains firm in his stance, essentially questioning Dano's ability to hold his own against a powerhouse like Day-Lewis. Whether this is a matter of personal preference or a legitimate critique of Dano’s acting style is subjective, but it opens the floor for a broader conversation about what qualities filmmakers like Tarantino prioritize in actors.

In a broader context, Tarantino’s comments reflect his broader tastes in cinema, as seen in his praise for Ridley Scott’s *Black Hawk Down*, which he named his favorite film of the century so far. Tarantino’s choices reveal his admiration for strong performances and intense storytelling, with an apparent bias toward action and character-driven narratives. His critique of Dano, in this light, might be less about personal animosity and more about his preference for actors who deliver commanding presences onscreen.
