'I refuse to be limited': Lucy Liu challenges stereotypes in 'Ally McBeal,' fights with 'elegance' in 'Kill Bill,' and portrays a 'ticking time bomb' in 'Rosemead'

Lucy Liu has long defied Hollywood's stereotypical portrayals of Asian characters, most notably in her groundbreaking role in Ally McBeal. The actress, who portrayed the sharp and fierce attorney, Joan, admits that playing such a layered character allowed her to explore a variety of personal stories, such as Joan's complex relationships with family members. As Liu notes, television roles offer a unique opportunity for characters to grow and evolve, something she discovered throughout her run on the show.

"As the series progressed, I learned so much about Joan," she explains. "I found out that she had a sister, and that her father was homeless. There were so many new layers added to her character, and it was fascinating to be a part of a show that was so open to evolution. It felt like an ongoing journey, and I was constantly learning." Liu believes that her experience on the show, which lasted several seasons, taught her valuable lessons in work ethic and dedication. "It wasnt just acting; it was about being part of a family with the cast and crew. I think if I had left the show early, I would have missed out on a major part of my growth as an artist," she admits.

Aside from her work in television, Liu has ventured into film, continuing to defy expectations. Her role in Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill as the deadly O-Ren Ishii is another example of her breaking free from traditional roles. Liu portrays a character who exudes elegance while executing fierce combat, combining grace with intensity. "Fighting with elegance was something I really wanted to explore in that role. It was all about the balance of power and beauty," she reflects.

Looking ahead, Lius career is poised for another shift. She recently worked with renowned director Steven Soderbergh on his latest project, Presence, a hauntingly original film that puts a new spin on the traditional haunted house genre. Liu plays the matriarch of a dysfunctional family who unknowingly shares their home with a ghost who has lost its memory. What makes the film particularly unique is that it is shot from the ghosts perspective, adding an eerie and innovative touch to the narrative. "It was a leap of faith, but it turned out to be one of my best performances," she says, reflecting on her experience working with Soderbergh. "He told us from the start, 'This is either going to work or its not,' and then we just went for it. Thats what I love about himhis confidence and willingness to take risks."

Liu has also been contemplating directing a feature film herself, and she cites Soderbergh as an inspiration in that regard. "Ive always wanted to direct, but Im waiting for the right project," she explains. "Steven is someone who takes chances, and thats what makes his work truly exceptional. Its the spirit of taking risks and doing something unique that really speaks to me."

As for whats next for Liu, fans can expect her to continue defying expectations, whether in front of the camera or behind it. Her journey, from breaking stereotypes to embracing new challenges, is a testament to her evolution as an artist and her commitment to pushing boundaries.
