Anime compilation movies are now a common practice. While they can sometimes feel like a commercial move, they also give animators the chance to be compensated for creating high-quality series like Jujutsu Kaisen. These films allow fans to revisit the story on larger screens, whether at home on a laptop or streaming via Crunchyroll or Netflix, or in theaters. Importantly, movies such as Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution also serve as a teaser for upcoming seasons.
The story picks up right after season two, with an eerie veil descending over Shibuya during the busy Halloween festivities, trapping civilians. Satoru Gojo, the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer, confronts the ensuing chaos, only to face Curse Users and Spirits plotting to seal him away.
Plot Overview
Yuji Itadori, along with his classmates and elite Jujutsu Sorcerers, engages in a fierce battle against the curses during the Shibuya Incident. Following this, ten regions across Japan become breeding grounds for curses, orchestrated by the notorious Curse User Kenjaku. As the deadly Culling Game begins, Special Grade Sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu is tasked with executing Yuji for his supposed crimes.
Film Structure and Animation
The first 4050 minutes of Execution streamline the dialogue-heavy segments and jump directly into the series major battles. Editor Keisuke Yanagi skillfully synchronizes the fight sequences with the Shibuya Incident arcs opening track, SPECIALZ by King Gnu, enhancing the tension and emotion of the scenes. Rewatching these sequences evokes the intense losses suffered by the good sorcerers.
However, one drawback is the lack of enhanced environmental detail in key fights, such as Sukuna versus Mahoraga. Fans previously criticized this during the seasons airing, and the film does not fully address this issue. Nevertheless, a few new shots and scenes amplify the impact of pivotal moments. This choice may reflect a desire not to overburden the animators at MAPPA.
New Content and Cinematic Highlights
The two new episodes included in the film transition smoothly into Season 3s next arc. The opening scene of Yuji washing blood from his hands is a powerful visual, conveying the aftermath of previous battles. The film showcases Yuji and Choso teaming up to fight multiple cursed spirits unleashed by Pseudo-Geto, effectively setting up the Culling Games.
Innovative cinematography stands out, such as a GoPro-style POV from above a city bridge, giving a dynamic perspective of rooftop combat. These sequences balance action with the narrative setup for the upcoming battles. Expository moments are also visually engaging, like a scene of Zenin Clan members in a dimly lit room where subtle movement of shadows heightens tension, demonstrating MAPPAs attention to cinematic techniques.
Final Thoughts
The compilation segments of Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution are adequate, mainly due to fast-paced editing and a fitting soundtrack. The two new episodes succeed in capturing the essence of the prelude to the Culling Games. While animation, composition, and style are solid, the full impact will be clearer once Season 3 begins airing in January 2026. For fans eager to build excitement for the new season, this film is a worthwhile experience. Otherwise, it offers limited novelty for theatrical viewers.
